Candidate help

Stuck on your assessment? Start here.

Most problems are a browser permission or the wrong thing shared. None of these is your fault, and most take a minute to fix. Your invite link is the one in the email you were sent.

My camera or microphone is blocked

Your browser remembers if you clicked Block once. Allow both again:

  1. Click the camera or padlock icon at the left end of the address bar.
  2. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow (in Firefox, remove the Blocked entries).
  3. Go back to the assessment page and press Try again. If the browser asks to reload the page, accept.

Still nothing? Quit Zoom, Teams, Meet and any other app or tab that may be using the camera, check a laptop camera's privacy shutter is open, and if you use a headset, that it is plugged in and not muted. The invite page has a "Test my setup" button that checks all three without starting anything.

It won't accept my screen share

  1. Press Try again, and in the sharing window choose the Entire Screen tab (not Window or Chrome Tab), select your screen, then Share.
  2. Only one monitor can be connected. Unplug an extra one, or on Windows press the Windows key and P and choose PC screen only.
  3. On a Mac, if nothing shares: System Settings, Privacy & Security, Screen Recording (Screen & System Audio Recording on newer macOS), turn on your browser, then quit and reopen it and open the same link again.

I closed the tab or lost my connection

Open the same link from your invite email again. Your answers are saved automatically every few seconds while you work, so you come back to where you were. You will be asked to allow your camera, screen and microphone again.

Your time limit keeps running while you are away (apart from any time your test was paused because your microphone was silent), so come back as soon as you can. If your internet drops while you work, keep going: the page shows "Not saved yet" until the connection returns.

Please don't switch to another tab or window during the test to look for a fix: you get one warning to come back within 10 seconds, and leaving again, or staying away longer, ends the test. If the page itself shows an error, use its Try again button.

My link says it has closed

Every invite has a closing time, shown on the invite page. If it passed before you began, nothing was recorded and only the person who invited you can send a new link, so ask them (the invite page has a button for it).

If you had already started before the closing time, you can keep going until your own time limit runs out, even if the invite window has since closed.

Links copied from an email sometimes lose their last characters. Use the button in the original email, or ask for a fresh link.

I'm on a phone or tablet

The assessment shares your whole screen along with your camera and microphone, and phone and tablet browsers can't share their screen. Open the same link on a laptop or desktop computer, in Chrome or Edge. Nothing is used up by trying on the wrong device, and the link works from any computer until it closes. On the invite page you can copy the link or email it to yourself.

I need more time or another way to take it

The time limit and the requirements (camera, screen, microphone) are set by the company that invited you, not by CodeOath. If you need extra time, an accommodation, or to read text aloud or use assistive technology, ask the person who invited you before you begin. Their contact details are on the invite page.

My test ended and I don't know why

The page you land on says what happened. A test ends by itself if you leave the assessment tab or window again after your one warning, or stay away longer than 10 seconds, or if your microphone stays silent for the longest time the test may be paused. Your saved answers are still sent to the company.

What happens next is the hiring company's decision, not CodeOath's. Write to them with the reference shown on that page.

Still stuck?

For questions about this assessment itself (the time, the questions, what happens next), write to the person who invited you. For a problem with the page or the technology, tell us what you saw, which browser you use, and any reference code the page showed.
